Freshwater Fly Fishing Flies

Native Freshwater Fly Fishing Adventures in Far North Queensland (FNQ)

Chris Achilles @in_the_suds regularly shares his FNQ adventures, and his insights have inspired many to explore these pristine waters. Here’s what you need to know.

Top Freshwater Spots for Fly Fishing

FNQ is packed with incredible spots where native species thrive. These are some of my go to places:

Tinaroo Dam: Trophy barra and sooty grunter are common around structure.

Ross River: A well-known barra hotspot.

Daintree River: Head to the upper reaches for jungle perch and sooty grunter.

Herbert and Tully Rivers: Jungle perch, barramundi, sooty grunter, and even mangrove jack are all in play here

Trophy Barra and Sooty grunter

Recommended Freshwater Flies

Here are some freshwater fly fishing flies that get the job done for different species:

Barramundi: Articulated streamers, sliders, musky flies and frog imitations are also deadly.

Jungle Perch: Foam terrestrials, hoppers, small poppers, and Woolly Buggers.

Sooty Grunter: Bright or natural-colored streamers, frog flies, bass poppers, and terrestrial patterns.

Tips for FNQ Fly Fishing Milkfish Mastery:

These fish are no joke. Target them on flats or estuary edges on a rising tide, and come prepared with strong gear and precise casts.

Best Times: Early mornings and evenings are prime, but don’t overlook nighttime when fish go nocturnal.

Gear Up: For barra and milkfish, use 6–9 weight rods. For jungle perch and sooty grunter, 3–6 weights will do.
